Denver, Colorado

The building owner wanted to repurpose an amenity deck that was under-utilized in order to better position the building to attract a new tenant. studioINSITE provided conceptual design to explore a range of options to establish activity zones and to differentiate between private and semiprivate areas.

The preferred alternative establishes a hierarchy of uses transitioning from the building to a seating and dining plaza. A garden area softens the edge of the dining plaza and provides seasonal interest. A lawn area hosts informal seating, and serves as the transition zone between the public areas to a trellised area for private seating and small gatherings.

studioINSITE was asked to explore a range of ‘wow factors’ to generate excitement about the opportunities afforded by the roof deck. Non-traditional seating elements such as hammocks, swings, and hanging chairs were explored. Topography on the seating lawn were conveyed through tilted planes, berms, and undulating seating elements. Sculptural elements were introduced that could provide non traditional seating, reclining and climbing opportunities.
